Tohatsu 6hp

Tohatsu 6hpChoosing an outboard motor used

30 years ago American manufacturers to drive the outboard motor market.Names such as Mercury, Johnson, Evinrude, Chrysler, directed the field competition with each other to produce outboard motors larger and larger. However, while this was happening, they were removing the smallest of outboard motors. These are the outboard motors that sell more and are often the prime mover of many of us, you can buy. That being the case for many of us stick to the same brand (brand loyalty) that we buy other outboards larger over the years. The Japanese have seized on this and gradually Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Tohatsu focusing on small outboard engines began to take more than the market leaders. They achieved this dominance by improving the efficiency and reliability. As well as adding functionality to these small outboards previously only available on larger engines.

The Japanese manufacturers expanded the power range. They again came to dominate the market for outboard engines, at least up to 20 hp. U.S. manufacturers instead of competing with the Japanese gave up and decided to buy these engines from the Japanese and badges as their own. Now the Chinese have entered the market. Basically do what the Japanese had already done, by copying the best features of today's engines and at the same time controlling costs.

So let us compare usedoutboard engines that are available for those looking for an outboard motor of their boat. If we take a boat big enough say a Pioner 12, each engine is pushing a heavy weight due to water. If we carry outboard following:

Mercury 2.5hp, 3.5 hp Mercury, Mariner 2.5hp, Tohatsu 3.5HP, 2.5hp Yamaha, Suzuki 2.3hp Honda 2.5hp, 2.6hp and Parsun. These outboards are 4-stroke engines, due to an EU directive which prevents the two time to be sold European.Union. These outboards will provide a relatively wide range of engines available on the market for power dinghies.

To judge a motorboat used against several other tests have been completed. A tensile test at a fixed point has shown that Mercury and Tohatsu 3.5HP 3.5HP were most powerful at 90 pounds of thrust (these two engines with the Mariner are virtually identical). The least effective was the Honda 2.3hp to 66 pounds of thrust. Between the two, the Suzuki 2.5hp to 83 pounds of thrust, the Yamaha 2.5hp to 78 pounds of thrust and Parsun 2.6hp 70 lbs of thrust.

Next test was the fuel consumption. At full speed - 5.75 knots, the best outboard engines were Yamaha and Suzuki 2.5hp 2.5hp at least 20%. The worst was the 2.6hp Parsun. When the throttles were eased and the boat was cruising the comparison of fuel consumption was less obvious, difference of only about 10%. All these figures are 4-stroke engines. However, according to figures previously recorded for the two time in similar circumstances, the engines were aged up to 50% less fuel efficient at full speed. Very thirsty! Remember 2 stroke outboard engines are still available second hand.

Then, the weight of each outboard motor was compared. Four-stroke engines are heavier than the old 2 stroke because of the chainsaw, etc. Mercury, Mariner, Tohatsu, Yamaha and all weighed about Parsun. 38-41 lbs (18 kg) .. However, the Honda and Suzuki 2.3hp 2.5hp weighed less than 28 lbs (12.5 kg.).
The price of each outboard motor was then compared. It was difficult to be precise as discounts and offers for sale are always changing.
Although Parsun was the cheapest and it is virtually identical in the same engine as the Yamaha 2.5hp, it is not as good. It's like me to follow a recipe from Gordon Ramsay in the letter, but compared side by side that you just know its going to be much better. The Chinese are able to copy, just like the Japanese did before them, but they have not right yet!

Finally a bit of ab.
