Thick Toenails

I have trouble clipping nails of my mother and she will not see a doctor. I think she has a fungus, because his toenails are thick and rigidy and discolored. I tried the-counter remedies, but they have not helped yet. She is 76 and will not see a doctor for this problem. Does anyone have a home remedy that works?
