The name of the illness - bipolar - tells us that these are two ends. At its simplest it can be considered as mood swings - from mania to depression and back. Consider separately

Mania Symptoms of mania can range from normal mood through hypomania (which includes mild to moderate) to severe mania.

Symptoms of depression

depression of mood are normal with mild depression and moderate to severe depression.

aec Lack of appetite resulting in weight loss aec Often unable to sleep

aec Lack of concentration coupled with difficulty in remembering things

aec Feelings of guilt and hopelessness

aec Having hallucinations and illogical thinking

aec suicidal thoughts

A patient will not experience all these symptoms. So the two extremes can not be lived in equal measure. The swing is not like a pendulum moving back and forth in all sorts of rhythms. It may be the depression is deep and long and even mania barely perceptible.

There are words to describe the various combinations of bipolar symptoms. However, the symptoms are in mixtures according to the individual and the medical advice should be sought.

Fast cycle The term used to describe the movement in and out of the normal atmosphere in one or the other extreme, or extreme to another. Sometimes four or more times in the space of one year.

Mixed episode is when both ends of the spectrum occur together, it is possible to be full of ideas and not yet able to enjoy it.

Cyclothymia There is a tendency to swing from mania mild to mild depression and back continuously for at least two years.

These are symptoms of psychosis and hallucinations of delirium and lose touch with reality. Communication with others can be difficult. This is probably the rarest of these diseases.
