An ulcer occurs when the lining of these organs is corroded by acidic digestive juices which are secreted by cells of the stomach.

The cost of medical treatment of peptic ulcer and its complications runs in the billions of dollars a year. Recent medical advances have increased our understanding of ulcer formation. Improvement and expansion of treatment options are now available ...

Q. What are the symptoms of an ulcer?

Abdominal discomfort is the most common symptom. This malaise

  • is a dull pain and gnawing
  • back and forth for several days or weeks

Endoscopy is a test that uses an endoscope, a thin tube and illuminated by a tiny camera on the end. The patient is lightly sedated, and facilitates the physician carefully the endoscope through the mouth and throat to the stomach and duodenum ...

There are three types: -

  • The rapid urease test detects the enzyme urease, which is produced by H. pylori.
  • A histology test allows the doctor to find and examine the actual bacteria.
  • A culture test involves allowing H. pylori to grow in the tissue sample.

Q. How H. pylori causes a peptic ulcer?

H. pylori weakens the protective mucus layer of the stomach and duodenum, allowing acid to get through the mucosa as sensitive. Acid and bacteria irritate the lining and cause a sore or ulcer.

H. pylori can survive in stomach acid because it secretes enzymes that neutralize the acid. This mechanism allows H. pylori to make its way to the "Security" area of the protective coating of mucous. Once there, spiral-shaped bacterium contributes to burrow through the lining ...
