Transformers DVD Revew What is the formula for a blockbuster summer? car chases - check. Explosions - check. Shootouts - check. Pretty girls - check. Loveable (read marketable) characters, threatening villains, noble good - check, check, check.
"Transformers" is a blockbuster was true to form. Based on an already successful toy and TV cartoon franchise, "Transformers" recreates in the big screen is awe-inspiring imagination as well as many of us who grew up watching them on TV experienced. Perhaps because Peter Cullen voiced Optimus Prime, the same guy who voiced Optimus Prime in the cartoons. I will not dwell on the plot, it is fundamentally Autobots vs. Decepticons on Earth, duh.
But a lot of guys here are familiar. Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ratchet, Jazz, Ironhide and the Autobots. Megatron, Starscream, Barricade, Devastator, Bonecrusher, and Blackout for the Decepticons. Bumblebee is updated. He used to be a VW bug. It is now a Camaro. Megatron is a jet with a big gun. He used to be just a big gun, often drawn by Starscream. I remember that Ratchet an ambulance. There is something in this film. Devastator is the Constructicons combined into one. He is his own Decepticon in this movie as a reservoir. Barricade is a race car, but not one of the original Decepticons. He has a car Ford Mustang police squad in this film. Soundwave, my favorite Decepticon is missing. I especially loved him because of his voice Cylon Raider-like. Yes, it's the old school Cylons in Battlestar Galactica.
The action is fast and furious and often very difficult to assess in a single sitting. Too much blow off the explosion. In the fight scene street, city, Ironhide performs all sorts of tricks that I did not understand the big screen. You have a 60 foot robot cartwheeling and tumbling into the street to avoid missiles. But it took me several loops to fully appreciate the scenes. I remember the theater was that it was a cool fight.
Another scene is worth several views jacking Starscream F-22's. This scene shows you how much more powerful processors are machines by man.
"Non-Biological Extraterrestrials. Try and keep up with the acronyms"
Aside from geeking Autobots and Decepticons, an actor noted for his scenes of comedy, John Turturro as Agent Simmons from Sector 7. As a representative of the Department of secret government, John Turturro has the duty to recover Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) because of the NBE Relations Sam (Transformers). A summer blockbuster is not complete without the funny parts. And Agent Simmons wacky scenes remind you that this film should not be taken seriously and that's all for fun.
