Every day or night, millions of people around the world look for their treatment of restless legs syndrome. It is a painful and frustrating that deprives these persons and their partners a good night's sleep. The exact cause of RLS is not known, although most research points to a problem with brain chemistry. Fortunately there are treatments that can help relieve symptoms but may take some trials and error to find what will work best for each individual.

There are two trains of thought when it comes to treating Restless Legs Syndrome, natural treatments and over the counter or prescription drugs. Both have been proven effective in relieving symptoms associated with RLS.

Natural Treatment - For many people with restless legs syndrome simply get up and walk around to relieve the symptoms. The only problem is that its effects are usually felt in the evening after sunset or just make them lose sleep.

For others, taking hot baths, using a heating pad, rubbing liniment as a Ben Gay are the same and massage have all proven effective for symptomatic relief. The idea is to improve circulation in the legs that has the advantage of ease and relieve symptoms.

Another area where many people may find relief is to limit or stop drinking caffeinated beverages. Stimulants like caffeine can cause signals from the brain through the nervous system in the legs that cause creepy-crawling sensations are a sign of RLS. It was found that stopping caffeine consumption can have a positive effect when the treatment of RLS.

Because it is believed that RLS may also be caused by deficiencies in vitamins and minerals by taking vitamin and mineral supplements can be encouraged. For people with restless leg syndrome iron, with a B12 or folic acid supplement, is an important component of any treatment. The increase of iron in many cases, can reduce or eliminate the symptoms together.

The prescription drug therapy - are used only for those who suffer more severe symptoms of RLS and are used to treat symptoms alone, there is no known cure for this disease. There are four classes of drugs that are used to treat restless legs syndrome.

1. Dopaminergic - Used primarily to treat Parkinson's disease, they increase the level of dopamine in the brain.

2. Benzodiazepines - Works as a sedative on the central nervous system. Prescribed primarily to help people with RLS sleep all night.

3. Opiates - These drugs are used mainly to relieve pain and were considered effective in the treatment of restless legs syndrome.

4. Anticonvulsants - a class of drugs that work by suppressing sensory disturbances and severe muscle spasms.

As with any medical condition, it is best to consult your doctor before starting any type of treatment. If your symptoms of restless legs syndrome continue or get worse when trying a new treatment, it is in your interest to talk to your doctor.
