Restless Leg Syndrome Foundation

Restless Leg Syndrome FoundationWhat leg syndrome or sweetbreads?

Restless Legs Syndrome or RLS is a condition mainly described as an irresistible urge to move the body or a body part, to stop feeling uncomfortable or odd. The legs are what is most affected, hence the name. But the arm and torso may also be affected. Victims of the Restless Legs Syndrome describe feeling either burning, tingling, itching or sensations in the muscles. They would then move the affected body part to relieve the discomfort. RLS is also known as syndrome Wittmaack-Eckbom, and sometimes also called (erroneously) as Nocturnal myoclonus.

Symptoms of RLS

It is not a test that can give an accurate diagnosis of restless legs syndrome. Symptoms of the disease is also broad and sometimes vague. The following are symptoms that you have to look for when examining the possibility of RLS:

  • You feel uncomfortable sensations that increase with time and inactivity. It is usually your legs as these experiments.

  • You feel an urge to move your body parts. When you do, it is a relief and worsening discomfort. Stretching or walking is usually preferred, but any type of movement can be done.

  • The sensations and the need to move are worse at night and when you try to sleep.

  • You feel tired and exhausted and it affects your daytime activities and your personal life.

  • Some patients have reported problems with concentration and memory.

  • The cause of discomfort can not be detected by medical tests.

  • RLS can sometimes be hereditary. This means that if a family member has RLS, you can have it too.

  • The three types of RLS

There are three types of RLS have been classified by the Foundation of restless legs syndrome (www.rls.org):

    1. Primary or family: Restless Legs Syndrome is run in the family.
    2. Secondary RLS comes in the wake of another condition such as low iron levels or chronic diseases.
    3. Idiopathic RLS occurs when there is no known associated conditions or family history.

There are many conditions and disorders that can easily mimic the symptoms of restless legs syndrome. Muscle diseases, joint conditions, and traffic problems can be confused with symptoms of RLS. As mentioned, there is no known test to provide an accurate diagnosis for restless legs syndrome. So be patient and critical in research if he or she has RLS or whether it is a different condition.

There is no definitive cure for restless legs syndrome. There are treatments provided by health agencies, but most drugs are still disputed as to its effect in the elimination of the state.

RLS chooses no age. It can begin at any time. It may start in the years to his childhood or when you're mature enough. As time passes, the unpleasant feelings will be worse or disappear sometimes. Many have reported that the strange and uncomfortable sensations disappear for a while and return when it is idle. Symptoms can sometimes disappear permanently. But for most, Restless Legs Syndrome is a progressive disease.
