Pittsburgh Pediatrics

Mr. Alfonso Costa serves as president of the Pittsburgh Carson Scholars Fund of. Since its inception in 2004, the Pittsburgh Carson Scholars Fund has awarded more than 400 students in the Pittsburgh area public and parochial schools with money for scholarships to be used for college. The Carson Scholars Fund, Inc. is a charitable non-profit organization that was founded in 1994 by Johns Hopkins pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson and his wife, Candy, to recognize and reward students in grades 4-11 striving for academic excellence (3.75 GPA or higher) and demonstrate a strong commitment to their community.

Carson Scholars, in addition to receiving a sum of money, are honored at a banquet elegant surrounded by friends and family. They receive a medal and a certificate of taxation. Their schools are presented with a trophy inscribed great to put on the screen for the whole school to enjoy. Students are likely to be selected as Carson Scholars in the fourth year. This means that they return to their schools in the academic banquet as heroes, as role models for their classmates. This recognition encourages the whole school to work for academic success.

Carson Scholars are not only intelligent, but they showed a genuine interest in people and their communities through civic and humanitarian activities. Carson Scholars are selected on the basis of need, although many researchers come from needy circumstances. When Carson Scholars are chosen, they know that on the basis of their personal achievement. As the chair of the section of Pittsburgh, Dr. Alfonso Costa is committed to helping Dr. Ben and Candy Carson realize their dream of having a scholarship Carson in all schools in the United States.

On December 7, 2009 Dr. Alfonso Costa, and the co-organizers of Jerome Bettis and James Farrior, hosted the 6th Annual Charity Auction and Cocktail Event. It is the only section of Pittsburgh annual fundraiser. The event was held at Bossa Nova in downtown Pittsburgh, and the evening was marked by an autograph session with members of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and silent and live auctions.

The banquet sixth annual scholarships will take place in spring 2010. The 6th Annual Charity Auction of the event was sponsored by M & T Bank, Costa Land Company, and Dr. Gerald Loyacona.
