The growing obesity epidemic among children is now considered one of the main causes of the increase of juvenile diabetes in our country today. Although not everyone agrees on the causes and affects, it is hard to argue with the continuous increase of children with type 2 diabetes who are overweight too. In fact, as the percentage of obese children raises so does the percentage of people with juvenile diabetes at about the same rate.

There seems to be two main reasons for this increase in type 2 diabetes in children. Most children these days have a sedentary lifestyle that revolves around watching television, playing video games or use their computers to chat with their friends and email. The second issue for many children is their unhealthy eating habits and nutrition. Living the fast food lifestyle or eating a bag a chips while playing video games is one of the main reasons for the preponderance of overweight children that we see today.

For many years type 2 diabetes was something that adults are overweight faced, mainly because the children did not have weight problems they have today. Type 2 diabetes in adults is also known as noninsulin-dependent diabetes. The primary treatment for this type of this disease is a lifestyle involving diet and exercise for children and adults.

A major concern of type 2 diabetes is the key juvenile may be later in the life of a child. Children with type 2 diabetes were found to have more complications than life-threatening type 1 diabetes. Some miners big problems with this type of diabetes face are heart disease, nerve damage, kidney failure, blindness and limb amputation, especially of feet and legs.

The first line of defense against type 2 juvenile diabetes is probably the most obvious. Maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise and prevent onset of disease. For children already diagnosed this treatment even if they want to avoid complications to their health later in life.

For diabetic children a healthy diet is the cornerstone of their treatment. A balanced diet low in sugar, saturated fat and salt is the way to go. Foods rich in fiber such as fruits and vegetables and complex carbohydrates are best for diabetics. Even then, the carbohydrate-rich foods should be consumed throughout the day to help avoid a significant rise in blood sugar. Regular physical activity or exercise is also recommended to help move the blood glucose and insulin in the cells.

Childhood obesity is an epidemic all parents should take seriously. The long-term health affects all children are involved, especially with an increased risk of juvenile diabetes, a disease that affects one child in their lifetime. By changing the simple lifestyle based on healthy eating and physical activity to the onset of type 2 diabetes can be prevented, delayed or even in children at high risk.
