The aim of this research was to determine the reasons for admission and results between underfives in ICU Pediatric Bugando Medical Center from July 2006 to June 2007. intensive care at BMC is provided in two units, the NICU and AICU. Design of the study, retrospective cross-sectional study. Methodology: data on age, refferal source, time of admission, diagnosis and length of stay and outcome data were collected from July 2006 to June 2007 and analyzed using Epi Info developed by CDC a 2005 version. RESULTS: 471 patients were admitted to ICU and 249 patients in AICU July 2006 to June 2007. NICU patients 56.6% were male and 43.4% were women. Mortality is higher among women (59.3%). The overall mortality among newborns admitted to NICU for one year from 58.1%. Prematurity and birth asphyxia were the commonest causes of admission in ICU, 36.7% and 25.1% respectively. Others involved in congenital heart disease, aspiration pneumonia, hypothermia, anemia etc70.2% and 72.4% of patients admitted because of prematurity and sepsis, respectively, died NICU.The term average stay was 4.73 hours. AICU patients: 52.6% were male while 47.4% were women. Most patients need are those developed for ICU admission while in the rooms and the two reference sources Most of the patients survived. The overall mortality was 45.4% AICU and mortality was higher among male patients (46.6%) compared to patients Male (44.1%). The majority of patients were admitted during the hours of the afternoon (32.5%), while mortality was higher among patients admitted during the night hours (60.3%). malaria and pneumonia were the leading cause of admission AICU, 27.7% and 24.1% respectively. Other causes included head injuries, Congenital Heart Disease after surgery, sepsis, meningitis, malnutrition, diarrheal diseases, burn, poisoning, tuberculosis and pleural effusion etc94.1% of all patients admitted due to malnutrition died APCU.The average length of stay for all patients was 60 hours. CONCLUSION: Although the ICU was established for the purpose of reducing mortality among children in particular underfives, the mortality rate among those admitted to intensive care unit underfives BMC is still high (58, 1%), but mortality in underfives AICU is low (45.4%) compared to the neonatal intensive care. Introduction and literature review An intensive care unit or ICU, is a specialized section of a hospital that provides comprehensive and continuous care for people who are seriously ill and may benefit from treatment. This is a hospital for the care of critically ill patients to a more intensive level than is required by other patients. Powered by a specialized staff, intensive care unit contains a complex assortment of monitors and life support equipment that can sustain life in situations when death, including respiratory distress syndrome in adults, renal failure, multiorgan failure and sepsis. The purpose of the intensive care unit (ICU) is simple even if the practice is complex. Health professionals working in the ICU or rotate it during their training at any time to provide intensive monitoring and treatment of patients seven days a week.
