Dermatopatholgy is the study of diseases of the skin at a microscopic level. It encompasses both the diagnosis of each patient by examining skin biopsies and the study of causes or pathogenesis of skin diseases at the cellular level.
Dermatologists recognize most skin diseases based on their appearance, their distribution on the body and behavior over time. Sometimes these criteria are not sufficient and a skin biopsy is taken to examine under a microscope. This microscopic examination reveals the histology of the disease and accurate diagnosis. From time to time, additional testing should be performed on samples of skin, such as immunofluorescence, electron microscopy or flow cytometry.
One of the biggest challenges of dermatopathology is the high number of different skin diseases. There is an estimated 1500 different rashes and skin tumors, including variants, and not a doctor who has seen them all. Therefore, dermatology and dermatopathology are among the most complex specialties of medicine.
