By Tom Gilliam, Ph.D.

The holidays are here in their entirety (fattening) force. And unfortunately for the health conscious, with the tinsel and the tree is the assault of temptation: the rich turkey gravy, dressing, sugar cookies, eggnog, pie, all those comfort foods that taste especially comforting in times of recession, vacation ruined. But as we prepare ourselves mentally to push out of the festive table together, it is easy to forget that we are not the only ones facing our children are tempting treats, too.

Exactly. Between the parties at school and downs stuffed with sweet surprises, our youth are equally sensitive to guilty pleasures, we afford during the holiday season. The bad news is that the occasion "special" indulgences we can during the holidays can quickly turn into bad habits to our children from harmful habits that will last long after the gifts have been unwrapped.

A lifetime of fitness always begins at home, and it is also true when the house is covered with tinsel and lights. Research shows repeatedly that the only way to fight against childhood obesity is to make nutrition and priorities of the family of the year. And if it's good for them to deliver a little during the holidays, you should gently steer your children away from the race third and butter dinner handle double chocolate candies. "

It is not surprising that childhood obesity is a growing problem in the U.S. In fact, the New England Journal of Medicine recently reported that one of three children is now overweight or obese. This reality has prompted more companies to teach the skills of the family "principle to their employees, helping to" bring children and families healthy and "the tendency of the scale.

Children live what they learn, and parents are their only source of information. If they see you make unhealthy choices, they will naturally assume that it's good for them too.

With busy holiday schedules and tight budgets, it can seem impossible to find new and creative ways to help get your family on the fitness movement. Not at all. Making some simple changes to daily routines of your family can have a huge impact on the overall fitness of each.

Here are some tried and true for your family in shape, not just during the holidays, but at any time of the year:

Find "hidden" in the course of your holiday routine maintenance. It may not seem like a sorcerer, but good old fashioned tasks may be one of the best ways to stay fit. And, fortunately, there are many reasons to work this time of year. Make sure to involve your children in a party before the holidays cleaning or just general cleaning up the house. Vacuuming, dusting, cleaning, sweeping and removal of waste are all ways that your children can do their part for the family while helping to get the physical activity they need every day. Crank up the good music during the time chore to get everyone moving and the house will be clean in no time!

Brave the cold air and enjoy the winter workouts. The days of snow, bundled up and move. Go sledding, build snow angels, and have a snowball fight with your children. If you are near a city, press the sidewalks and enjoy the window displays of holiday. Or if it's too cold or rainy, visit an indoor sports facility, like a batting cage or an indoor climbing center. It certainly beats sitting inside being a couch potato!
