Meniscus Surgery Recovery

Meniscus Surgery RecoveryThe tears of the meniscus

What are the menisci?
The menisci are pieces of cartilage in the knee which play an essential role in athletes. These are two C-shaped structures that lie between the femur and tibia on the inside ("medial") and outside (lateral) aspect of the knee. They consist mainly of water and collagen fibers. Historically, the function of the meniscus was not clear, and some even consider them as remnants of remnants of embryonic tissue, such as the appendix. For this reason, complete excision of the meniscus (meniscectomy total) was made is not uncommon in the setting of a symptomatic meniscal tear .

aec Load tranmission - menisci are responsible for transmission between 50% to 70% of loads through the knee joint. In their absence, these charges are passed directly to the articular cartilage on the ends of bones.
aec Joint Stability - the menisci are secondary stabilizers of the knee in several planes, and become the primary stabilizer for front-to-back (anteroposterior) motion of the knee when the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is torn.

What is the anatomy of the menisci?
The menisci are "wedge-shaped" pieces of cartilage remains between the thigh bone (femur) and lower leg bone (tibia) in the knee joint. There are two menisci, one internal to the "inside" the knee and a lateral one on the "outside" of the knee. The medial meniscus is C-shaped, while the lateral meniscus is semicircular in shape. Both rest on the surface of the tibia and are anchored to the bone at the front and rear of the tray ("the roots of the meniscus).

Each meniscus can be divided into portions based on (i) the location in the knee, or (ii) the blood supply. In places, the meniscus can be divided into (i) the dorsal horn, (ii) the body, and (iii) of the anterior horn. These terms are useful to describe the location of meniscus tears. The tears in the posterior horn are the most common.

The blood supply of the meniscus comes from the periphery, where it attaches to the lining of the knee joint (capsule). For this reason, the peripheral one third of the menisci are generally well perfused, whereas the internal aspects are more limited blood supply and thus limited potential for healing. These different locations from central to peripheral were called the "red-red", "red-white and white-white" areas. This classification is important in the evaluation of meniscal tears and given their ability to heal after surgical repair.

Unfortunately, the total meniscectomy in young patients has been shown to significantly accelerate the wear of the degenerative knee. In addition, various essential functions of the menisci of the knee maintaining health have been well established. These include:

What are the tears of the meniscus in athletes?
A meniscus tear is among the most common orthopedic injuries and was familiarly called "torn cartilage" in the knee. They have touched almost every sport athletes. Even if they are more frequently observed in the dorsal horn, they can occur in any place and to affect either the medial, lateral, or both.

In athletes, a torn meniscus usually is a traumatic origin. They result from abnormally high or forces that the substance of the meniscus. Although they are often the result of a twisting force or pivoting movements, they can also occur with seemingly innocuous activities such as squats and jogging. Of baseball in defensive lineman sensors professionals, almost all sports and position player has been affected by this injury. Som.
