The most common side effects of benzodiazepines are related to their sedative and muscle relaxant. They include drowsiness, dizziness and decreased alertness and concentration. Lack of coordination can lead to ataxia, falls and injuries, particularly among the elderly. [53] [54] Another consequence is a lack of driving skills and an increased risk of road accidents. [55] [56] Decreased libido and erectile dysfunction is a common side effect. Depression and disinhibition may emerge. Hypotension and breathing can be suppressed encountered with intravenous use. [53] [54] Less common side effects are nausea and changes in appetite, blurred vision, confusion, euphoria, depersonalization and nightmares. Cases of liver toxicity have been described, but are very rare. [57] [58]
