If, as you say you've been able to sing both post-operatively, then I think that quitting smoking you have an excellent chance of finding your voice full time. I am not sure of the high rating as you seem to have scars related to surgery. Smoking is very irritating to the respiratory everything, your larynx is just reacting to the irritation. That sucked, but try to stop smoking for one week and then see if you have some improvement. Do gentle voice warm-up before trying the belt to opera.
