Genital herpes is the leading cause of genital ulcers worldwide, the prevalence of HSV 2 in the general population ranges from 10% to 60%. Most genital herpes is caused by HSV-2, although HSV-1 is approximately half of new cases in developed countries. The risk of contracting HIV is three times higher among people with HSV-2.

Neonatal herpes is a rare but serious complication of genital herpes. The acquisition of genital herpes during pregnancy has been associated with miscarriage, prematurity, and congenital and neonatal herpes. The frequency of seroconversion, symptoms of the illness of the mother, and the time of its greatest influence on the outcome of pregnancy has not been systematically studied.

Doctors examined 7,046 pregnant women with serological tests have shown the risk of HSV infection. Serum samples obtained at the first prenatal visit at about 16 and 24 weeks and during labor were tested for antibodies to HSV-1 and HSV-2 by Western blot, and results were correlated with the occurrence antenatal genital infections.

Women who were initially seronegative for HSV 1 and HSV-2 had an estimated chance of seroconversion for HIV or 3.7 percent, those who were initially seropositive for HSV-1 was considered a chance of HSV-2 seroconversion of 1.7 percent, and those who were initially HSV 2 seropositive had an estimated chance of zero for the acquisition of HSV-1.

Eighty-four of the women became seropositive for HSV, 34 of the 94 women (36 percent) had symptoms consistent with infection of herpes. Among 60 of the 94 pregnancies for which the time of acquisition of HSV infection was known, 30 percent of the infections occurred during the first quarter, 30 percent in the second, and 40 percent in the third quarter.

HSV seroconversion completed by the time work was not associated with increased neonatal morbidity or with any other cases of congenital herpes infection. However, among children born to nine women who acquired genital HSV infection shortly before labor, neonatal HSV infection occurred in four children, one of whom died.

Since clinical diagnosis is neither sensitive nor specific, virological and type-specific serologic testing should be used routinely. Antiviral treatment of infected partners and condom use reduce the risk of sexual transmission of HSV-2.

Yet, strangely, cures herpes are among the most difficult dermatologic treatments to be successful with. Of course, there are antiviral drugs available that can help, but they take time to process in the digestive tract to have a full effect on systemic herpes. A cure is needed immediately after an outbreak appears. Pills are often slow to take effect and are not a cure for herpes virus infections when blooming.

If treatments for herpes are not administered, epidemics can last from 2-20 days, depending on the individual. After the sores disappear after a period of remission.
