Hip What is hip?
Hip replacement is surgery for a hip replacement with an artificial ('prosthesis, hip joint). It is a common procedure and effectively relieves pain and restores mobility.
Why hip joint is replaced?
The hip is the joint that connects the thigh bone (femur) to the pelvis. The hip joint is called a "swivel" type of joint. The upper end (head) of the femur is rounded and smooth so that it fits into an empty cup in the basin. This provision gives the thigh the wide range of movement necessary for walking, running, climbing and jumping.
The hip joint is a synovial "common, which means it is bounded by a" capsule ". The space inside the capsule is filled with fluid, allowing the two bone surfaces to move freely on the other. The bone surfaces are covered by a perfectly smooth substance, called cartilage using this movement.
There are several reasons why a hip joint may need replacing. However, by far the most common reason for replacement of the hip joint damage due to arthritis. There are two main forms of arthritis, which are described in detail in another form. Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammation of the joints, which tends to affect women in early middle age. Osteoarthritis is the "wear" the common and most commonly affects the joints of the elderly. Both conditions can lead to the destruction of the hip joint resulting in pain and loss of joint mobility.
The hip joint may also need to be replaced after an injury. Among the elderly in particular, the head of the femur may be fractured in an accident and it may be possible to repair surgically.
Another reason, less common is the death of the femoral head. Maybe from a number of causes, including sickle cell anemia, trauma, excessive use of steroids and rare genetic conditions.
What happens during a hip replacement?
The joint replacement is an artificial version of natural ball and socket. It has two distinct components. The lower part is generally made of metal and a tree with part of the joint ball up. The other part of the artificial joint is the jack located in the basin, which may be made of metal or a particular type of plastic.
There are many different types of hip implants made of different materials and different forms. Improvements are made all the time to strengthen and develop these artificial joints. The surgeon performing the operation choose the type of joint replacement, he or she feels most appropriate for your condition and build.
During a hip replacement operation, the surgeon first cuts through the skin and parts of the muscle to reach the hip. The femur is then separated from his cup into the basin.
The rounded head of the femur is then removed and replaced by the artificial substitute. Taking natural in the pool is open to taking and artificial inserted. Both sides of the artificial hip joint is strongly linked to normal bone using a special glue, not the cement.
The ball and socket are then re-United and the muscles and ligaments repaired. Any definitive repair tissue are then made and the incision closed.
What are the preparations for a hip replacement?
The operation of hip replacement is performed under general anesthesia. This means you can be invited to visit the hospital one to two weeks before your surgery to have a preoperative interview with a nurse and / or the anesthesiologist. They will ask you questions about your current health status and past and need to know about allergies that you may have, medications you are taking (including over the counter products or vitamin supplements), surgery earlier, if you smoke or take street drugs.
