Reform of Health Care: Rx for peace of soul-mail Print iPod ShareThisPublished: Wed, August 5, 2009 @ 12:00 pm
By Kathleen Sebelius
As the political debate about how to make and pay for health reform is growing more and more controversial, we must not lose sight of why we're even having this conversation: We have a huge, once- in-a-lifetime opportunity to improve the lives of all Americans, as insured and uninsured.
Health insurance is fundamentally a question of peace of mind. If you have good insurance, you do not have to worry about an accident or sudden illness. You know that whatever happens to care, you and your family will be taken.
We can not eliminate all diseases. But thanks to health reform, we can give every American access to quality, affordable health insurance so that if they become ill, they have the best chance of getting better without the bankruptcy of their families.
The current system of health care gives businesses the assurance of power. They learn to choose who gets a policy. They can refuse coverage because of a preexisting condition. They may provide coverage only at exorbitant prices - or provide coverage so thin that it is not coverage at all. The Americans are left to worry about whether they are laid off and lose their insurance or to wake up from surgery with a $ 10,000 bill because they have not read the fine print on their policy.
By giving Americans choices, the health reform will roles. The Americans get peace of mind, and insurance companies will start to get nervous. They know that if they do not deliver great value to their customers flee. So they will start offering better coverage.
The reform will be to fill gaps in our current system. When both my son graduated from college, I had mixed feelings. I was incredibly proud of their accomplishments, but I dreaded the fact that they lose their health insurance when they left school. The peace of mind that comes with the reform of health means college graduations can become the party, they are supposed to be.
Consider the entrepreneur sitting at her desk, dreaming of his idea for a new business. At present, many entrepreneurs are paralyzed by our broken health insurance system. They know that if they leave their jobs, they may not be able to obtain insurance for their families. So they, and their innovations, stay put. Health reform means liberating entrepreneurs from America to continue their great ideas.
Without reform, we will miss out on these benefits. And our health care system will always be a financial time bomb. Recent estimates indicate that by 2040, health spending will eat up 34 percent of our gross domestic product. By comparison, the entire federal budget today is only 20 percent of our GDP. By acting now, we have the chance to slow health spending in a way that does slash benefits or reduce care. Instead, we can make investments in prevention, wellness and information technology that will enable the health care system health to get incredible results at a price everyone can afford. Imagine a system in which your doctor spend so much time trying to keep you healthy as you treatment when you are sick, where you and your doctor all the information you need to choose which treatments work best for you , where you never have to fill out the forms twice the same. Health reform is the first step in this direction.
Getting it
Obama and I are working closely with Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate and experts from health care to ensure that we get the details right to health reform. But we can not.
