According to EMC, the unprecedented growth experienced by Western Australia until the end of 2008 resulted in increased pressure on many aspects of the state, including work. With growth set to return in the resource sector, it is necessary to build, attract and retain a skilled workforce in Western Australia to meet industry requirements.

CME Chief Executive Officer Mr Reg Howard-Smith said: "The approach by state government to prepare for WA's Workforce Development Plan to maximize participation and effective use of skills, and promote smooth transition from training to the labor market should be commended.

"The greatest threat to sustainable development in Western Australia is the lack of a vision for growth. The Minister of Training, the Hon Peter Collier MLC gave a clear commitment to the importance of training and development in this state, "Mr Howard - Smith said.

"Capacity building, training and workforce planning are essential to the economic prosperity of the state and the creation of a department solely committed to this will ensure the emphasis on these issues," he said.

CME looks forward to working closely with the new Department of Education and Workforce Development to ensure an improved training system exists in Western Australia which helps the industry meet its skills needs.
