Unfortunately, there is no simple test, quick and easy to diagnose individuals suspected of suffering from bipolar disorder. In fact, this disease is not even a single disease. Rather, it is a term used to describe a number of mood disorders which are identified by mania or manic episodes, depressive episodes, and perhaps psychotic episodes. One or all of the above may be present, making a simple test and easy for the disease difficult to put together.

How bipolar disorder is diagnosed

A psychiatrist is usually the basis of a diagnosis of bipolar disorder on the patient's descriptions of their behavior and feelings. They can also use the information to family and friends of the patient and their own observations of the patient.

Although there are no simple tests to verify bipolar disorder, a patient must meet a specific list of conditions to be diagnosed with it.

A doctor may ask a series of issues between a patient's symptoms or behaviors of a list of criteria for diagnosing the disorder. However, there is no single test used by bipolar psychiatric professionals worldwide. There is also no biological tests to verify its presence.

The words, doctors can still manage some physical tests to ensure that a patient's symptoms are not caused by a possible medical problem. For example, a brain tumor or lesion can often cause a sudden change in behavior that could be confused with bipolar disorder.

Although there are no biological tests to diagnose bipolar disorder, there have been recent developments in brain scanning characteristics. In 2005, the Mayo Clinic announced he was working on a method that uses magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) to observe and identify characteristics of the metabolic activity that are common to patients.

How Affliction may be misdiagnosed

Because there is no biological test for bipolar disorder, it is often misdiagnosed. In fact, many patients are often diagnosed with depression, addiction, schizophrenia or other conditions before finally being correctly assessed with bipolar disorder.

Classification of disorders

Once diagnosed by different tests, clinical psychology, bipolar disorder is often classified into four groups. These include:

Bipolar I: In Bipolar I, the patient must have experienced at least one manic episode. This mania is not necessary to be accompanied or followed by an episode of depression.

Bipolar II Bipolar II has hypomanic episodes identified by more manic typical expressions. The patient must also be shown at least one major depressive incident. hypomanic episodes are not as extreme and debilitating manic versions.

Cyclothymia: Cyclothymia is characterized by episodes of hypomania and depressive episodes that are not major. For example, the patient experiences episodes of hypomania alongside cases of depression, but those are not debilitating depression.

Bipolar-NOS: NOS unspecified means and refers to a disorder of the AS-to-yet unclassified bipolar does not fit in the other three traditional categories of disease. For this diagnosis, a psychological test traditional bipolar may not be as effective as a personalized assessment of the patient.
